The holidays are always a stressful time, from shopping for presents to attending every family gathering. But throw in moving to a new home and your stress level may go through the roof. If you are planning on moving during the holidays, it is important to remember to breathe and take a moment to relax. Learn the best ways to plan your holiday move below to hopefully reduce your stress and enjoy a seamless transition to your new home.

Pack Now

Since the month of December is always busy, begin to pack now. Don’t put off packing and then find yourself rushing to get everything done in one day or just a few hours. It takes time to pack and to organize your belongings. Get a few boxes and try to pack at least one to three each night. Start with items you do not use on a regular basis and work your way through your home. By starting early, you will have time to focus on other things this December, like holiday parties and fun with friends and family.

Set a Schedule

To ensure your move takes place in a timely manner, set a schedule. Create a spreadsheet or just make a list of what you need to get done. Think about when you need to accomplish such tasks as turning the power off to your existing home or moving all of your belongings from your old home to your new dwelling. Set goals for packing and other necessities so that you can be done in a timely manner. You will be extremely busy with other activities as well as just normal holiday things to remember to be able to focus on what you need to get done for the move. By setting goals and a schedule, you have something physical to go by and a helpful reminder of what you need to get done.

Ask for Help

Do not be afraid to ask for help. Even consider it a Christmas present! Ask friends or family to help you pack or with the move. Be understanding that others will be busy to. If you can find people to help, make it fun. Consider hosting a holiday party. Order pizza and have everyone show up in ugly Christmas sweaters to help you pack up your home. Serve drinks in paper cups and listen to holiday music as you pack up your old belongings and prepare for the big move!

Take a Break

While there are deadlines to meet and things to get done, do not forget to take a break. Be sure to spend time with friends and family doing holiday things. You will regret letting the month go by without enjoying yourself if all you are doing is being focused on moving. Set aside time for fun so that you do not forget to have holiday spirit.

Overall, planning your move and asking for help will go a long way. Be cheerful that you are spending one last holiday in your old place before heading out on a brand new adventure!
